Step 1 - Go to the petrol station, make a note of your car’s mileage then fill your tank all the way up. (Enter this mileage into “Mileage 1“)

Step 2 - Drive normally until you need to fill up again.

Step 3 - Go to the petrol station, make a note of your car’s mileage then fill your tank all the way up again. (Enter this mileage into “Mileage 2“)

Step 4 - Make a note of how many litres of fuel you just bought.

Step 5 - Input the figures into our MPG calculator.

What does miles per gallon (MPG) mean?

Miles per gallon (or MPG) is a measurement of how much fuel your vehicle uses for every mile that you drive.

This measurement tells you the amount of fuel it takes to go one mile, and therefore can help you to save money on fuel by helping you choose vehicles with better fuel efficiency.

In general, the higher the mpg rating on a vehicle, the further you can go with one gallon of fuel.

Why you should know your vehicle’s MPG

Knowing your vehicle’s real mpg figure is important for several reasons, some of these include:

– It helps you to estimate the cost of running your vehicle on long journeys, knowing your mpg figure in advance allows you to budget accordingly and make informed decisions about the cost of fuel.

– It provides a benchmark on which to measure any future fuel efficiency efforts so you can track the impact of any changes you make.

– It gives you an indication of your car’s overall performance, which will help inform you when it might be time to consider a different vehicle or whether certain modifications would be beneficial or cost-effective.

What can affect your MPG

There are a variety of things that can affect a vehicle’s miles per gallon (mpg) figure.

The first and most obvious is the type of vehicle you drive, different types of vehicles will have different levels of fuel efficiency, depending on a range of factors such as the make, model, size and engine type.

Smaller vehicles with more efficient engines can achieve a higher mpg figure than larger vehicles which tend to be less fuel efficient.

The age of the car and its condition will also affect its fuel efficiency; modern cars with the latest technology tend to have better fuel efficiency ratings than older models.

The way you drive can also affect the miles per gallon you can achieve, for example how fast you drive, whether you use air conditioning, and how often you stop and start – can all influence the vehicle’s overall mpg.
